How does the rating work?

The jovoto voting system is based on collective intelligence: the votes of many determine the best ideas.
The more community members rate ideas, the better. This way, subjective preferences are balanced out and the ideas preferred by the majority are ranked highest.

Every idea enters the project with a rating based on the mean value of the other ideas’ ratings. The idea is then ranked according to the ratings it receives. Ratings influence the rank of an idea in a positive or in a negative way. Suppose the current average rating of an idea is 4.62, then 6 stars will raise this value and 4 stars will lower it.

jovoto uses a sophisticated algorithm which prevents a distortion of the results. Example: with one positive and no negative ratings, an idea would have an approval rate of 100%; however, with 98 positive and two negative ratings, the approval rate would be only 98%. The algorithm makes sure these kinds of distortions don’t occur.

Moreover, it makes sure that ideas with a higher number of ratings are more stabil in the ranking than ideas with only 10 or 15 ratings.

To ensure fair rating the jovoto systems monitors all ratings cast on the platform closely. We developed special monitoring algorithms that detect suspicious rating behaviour and alert the community management. Community members whose rating behaviour is found alarming are contacted, however jovoto resorts to deactivate a community member's rating status (meaning the ratings don't count) in case the rating behaviour is not changed to the better.
