Puraleza
Hello there,
I opened this public thread to have the opportunity to discuss
the concerns some community members expressed under the briefing of
the Contest "Puraleze your Life".
As the briefing is never the right place to do so, I took
screenshots of all comments in question, posted them underneath and
then deleted them in the briefing - this just for the sake of
completeness.
We can all use the screenshots as a starting point for discuusion - let me just also add some of my thoughts:
jovoto is a space for ideas.
jovoto is NOT about productions and finished designs. jovoto is
about ideas, about inspiration on which's basis further work will
probably have to be conducted.
Also, neither the client nor jovoto requests that the whole
task has to be fulfilled!
If you submit a logo only and you win, you'll get the prize money
anyway. We've always stressed this freedom of work - sometimes even
against some community members wish to have stricter rules
regarding briefing compliance.
Moreover, jovoto's principles are based on an open call - the community members decide in which contests they want to participate and how they want to participate. We currently run contests in the range of $2.500 to 10.000€ - and every community members has the freedom of choice.
In regards of the comments made under the briefing:
With a closer look at the briefing I have to say that the task
description may be a bit misleading. As always on jovoto we ask you
to develop ideas, to give inspiration. So if you want to submit a
scribble, a refined graphic design or a text based idea - it's up
to you! At the end of the day the community decides which ideas
should be rewarded.
And as stated above, nobody has to fulfill the whole range of tasks
described!
And as a last point: Greenleaf Products, Inc. is a registered business not affiliated with another entity that may bear a similar name. So it is a start-up and not affiliated with a company that exists since 1975. Unfortunately there was a wrong link in the briefing.
Having said all this I hope to have fruitful discussion on the topic. I very much appreciate your thoughts on this.
Thanks a lot
Frieda

Hi Frieda, Hi guys,
I read nsonne’s email and post with interest since I am Latin American. My first impression when I read the brief, interesting, but found the prize money not consistent or in balance with task, I understand why this resonated with other members. i whole heartedly agree that good work should be valued. I also thought Greenleaf would have great difficulty hiring freelance or company to do this job with quality results for that price.
However, this post by Frieda states how all this has nothing to do with valuing or not the work we do. In reality, it is more about a start up company that has a low budget. How we approach this as creative people is the question. Some community members may have no patience, I sure understand and respect that. But perhaps this is a chance to come up with possible solutions to deal with low budget situations, other than to desist from a project right away. Maybe we can accomplish a solution that becomes acceptable to all parties and the contest is salvaged. I sure hope so.
This post suggests we can reduce the task, though I sincerely find that difficult. The one thing I see possible to leave aside is the web site. Unfinished or scribbles is something not common for logos or package design either, plus the presentation level most members choose is outstanding level.
In the effort of keeping it positive, I'd like to share this, a solution I have applied in my freelance business when low budget, some money upfront, and then until sales reach "x" amount a percentage has been previously fixed, and a second payment is done. It has worked, because I believe good work renders results. This means client/brand loyalty too. Knowing the level of engagement, dedication, quality and creativity rendered in Jovoto, it’s hard to think client would not make a business deal with winner, even if modest, as a good will gesture. Greanleaf can also estimate and commit as when can it come back to us with additional projects.
Undoubtedly prize money is not in balance with task, it is the truth, but uncertainty and a contest page with no ideas is the worst case scenario. It’s rare in Jovoto when budget is so low, question is how to treat the exception as community members.
I remain in favor of giving the contest a chance, I am eager to see what other suggestions members can make and to learn Jovoto's final thoughts.
In light of ongoing discussions, contest time before it closes seems too short...
regards,
keeka

Do you remember the "Mom´s healthy secret"-contest? The price money was even lover (500 Dollar for a sold idea), but there was a high participation with tons of great ideas - because it was clear for everyone, it is a small one-woman-company with a limited budget.
My main concern is, that Greenleaf is a profitable US-company that likes to launch a new product line in Latinamerica - and tries to grab good ideas for a dumping-price. Maybe jovoto offers the community some informations about the company behind Puraleza - if it´s not www.greenleafgifts.com, who is it?

it is a start-up = new company.

Dear keeka, dear wueberg,
thanks a lot for your opinion and your engagement in the discussion! I am glad that we apparently could lessen your concerns a bit.
@keeka: thanks for your nice and understanding words! And you are totally right: what do you do with a small, start-up company that has only a small budget to work on - but a likeable product and an interesting task? We try to balance things out on the platform and find a good mixture of projects. Ultimately it's up to yourself whether you are more interested in the money or the task. Well, obviously our aim is to have both, good money and great task, right - but sometimes we also have to make compromises.
And yes, we sure hope that Puraleza will come up with some additional contests! I mean, they need their packaging to be done etc. And we always try to act as an intermediary to connect companys with creative talent. So in the best cases the client books the creative who's work they bought to do the finetuning. In the end that person not only ends up with the money for the sold idea and most probably some prize money, but also an assignemnet for further work. This happened many times already!
@wueberg: I definitely do understand your concern- I am always very conspicious of such things myself! But seriously, Puraleza is not a brand of some already-rich and successful key player, it's some new start-up, really nice guys as I've heared. I'll try to get some more tangible information and get back to you.
Best wishes
Frieda

Thanks for clearing up the situation, Frieda. It was quite confusing to hear of the Start-up Greenleaf and at the same time you find dozens of informations about a same called company that exists for decades.
Besides it was helpful to clarify the briefing. In the beginning the task sounded like creating a complete CD. Maybe it would have been better just to ask for a logo and a tagline. Experience has shown that the community always presents more than asked for in the briefing.
